Continued from Making a (RP) Character, Part One.
How did I create my main role play character? Those that know me know that my main on WoW is my warrior, Lycannon. When I first created her it wasn't for role play, in fact I didn't even know you could RP on WoW when I began playing the game.
I had RPed a lot before on forums using Lycannon across different genres and universes. Every time I rolled her she was always a warrior or something melee. I can thank The Legend of Zelda for that influence. It was the first game I played and playing a character that got up in a bad guy's face (most of the time) just felt right. She had a few different incarnations and I changed the name 'Lycannon' to fit into whatever universe I was playing at the time. Kate, Candy, Lycandra, Candryss - The list goes on. She originally came from a futuristic, post-apocalyptic sci-fi RP I had been doing with some online friends. She was a field medic of Middle Eastern descent with platinum, almost white colored hair. That is a nod to Storm, my favorite of the X-men and the first ethnic woman I can remember being in a leadership role. (I was like 3 or 4 at the time. 90's cartoon, if you were curious.) She had a spicy 'soldier type' attitude that I built her around, and she was proficient in martial arts and blasting aliens with her plasma gun.
So, we get to World of Warcraft. I started on Boulderfist - US, one of the several 'famous' PvP servers of the many that are out there. I really only rolled there because that was where most of my IRL friends played, and I leveled from 1- 70 as Protection. Oh Burning Crusade, how I miss you. Anyway, before all of that, queue me sitting there at the character creation page staring at factions, races and classes. I already knew I was going to roll a Draenei. I had seen concept art for them previously in a book over at a friend's place several months before and really fell in love with their lore (despite it being tossed together and retconned). I love sci-fi and the thought of playing something that sort of brought both that and the fantasy genre together really made me want to play this race.
I pick a Draenei. She's a warrior because I like that sort of thing. Okay, now I have to choose her appearance from the small lists of customizations WoW has to offer. Given from what I said above, I picked her hair to be white and straight, and her skin to be dark purple, almost a deep gray color. I wanted her horns to sweep backwards because it looked elegant, and because I didn't have the graphics settings turned up decently on the computer I had at the time, I sort of winged how her face looked. Later on I was glad I went with the face I did, because it fits her personality well anyway. Her other features I came to loathe and changed them as soon as the barber shop became available.
Fast forward several years and two server hops later, Lycannon has gone from just some pretty pixels to having an actual backstory and a personality, as well as a ton of crazy drama and a lot of fun. Sometimes you create a character with the intent on having him or her be one way, and they turn out another. Unfortunately for Draenei, their history has a giant gaping hole in the middle of it with very little lore to go on. I've had to make up some things for Lycannon, doing my best to stay within the limits of what information I had been given to work with and the lack of any new history for the past 4 or 5 years. As difficult as it was to fully flesh out this character because of missing official lore, I still consider the Draenei to be my favorite race within the game and I look forward to raging at whatever they finally decide to give us to use. I may have to change some of her background and pretend it never happened when that time comes, but what really matters in the end is that I had fun creating this character and RPing her. I still role play, and like it has before her story is changing, and will probably continue to do so until I stop playing this game altogether. I've RPed Lycannon withing the World of Warcraft universe longer than any other she's been, and some things that have only happened in the game will carry on to wherever else I take her, just like previous and profound stories have made the character who she was before I ever made her in WoW.
Whether you're new to RP entirely or you've been doing it for a while and want to establish a character inside WoW, the most important thing to remember is to have fun with your story. If you stick with it, you'll make some great friends and learn more about the game you're playing than you ever will just by killing other players or raiding. I gave an example of how I made one of my characters, the most important one to me, because I know her best and she's the oldest of any other RP character I have made. It's just some insight into how I did it, as there is never any true right or wrong way. Unless you're a dragon. That's sort of wrong.

Go ahead and ponder why the hell Forge is wearing a speedo. The rest is after the jump.
